Assignment 2.2 - Religious Songs
Negro spirituals are the religious songs sung by African Americans since the earliest days of slavery. These religious songs were not sung just in churches or in religious ritual settings. Travelers in the Old South and slaves themselves reported that music about God and the Bible was sung during work time, play time, and rest time as well as on Sundays at praise meetings. That these songs were sung not just in ritual worship but throughout the day meant that they served as powerful shields against the slaveholders and their horrible ways of treating slaves.
The second assignment in this unit is also about the song "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot". This time you are going to take a really close look at the meaning of the lyrics. This song was not only used to worship God but also to convey a hidden message. Go to assignment 2.2 and have a look!
