Assignment 1.1 & 1.2 The Beginning of Slavery
When did slavery start?Slavery started when a Dutch slave ship carrying twenty kidnapped Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, North America in 1619. The slaves were traded for food and services. From that moment on, slavery spread throughout the American colonies. The lives of slaves was dominated by work and terror. Slaves held a wide range of jobs, such as cook, blacksmith, and carpenter. However, the majority of slaves worked as agricultural laborers on the tobacco fields and cotton or sugar plantations.
The slaves were brought to America by ship. These slave ships carried hundreds of Africans. This voyage by boat was horrible. After having been seperated from their families and everything else they loved, the slaves were crammed on a ship without hardly any room to breath or move, no food, and the suffering of other slaves was horrifying.
